From the author's website: THE SHADOW-COLLECTOR’S APPRENTICE IS a semi-historical magical mystery. Set in 1963, the story follows twelve-year-old Cully Pennyacre as he begins his new job as an apprentice at Batty’s Antiques. Cully’s father disappeared a few months ago, and the boy hopes the summer job will help his family’s subsequent money troubles. The owner, Batty, is as nutty as his name implies, and he tells Cully he can capture people’s shadows with a special machine he keeps in the shop’s storeroom. But then the boy realizes that Batty is telling the truth. What’s worse, people who have their shadows stolen become mean and angry. Cully turns to his two best friends to find out what Batty is doing with the contraband shadows, and what can be done to stop him. I've read a few of Amy Gordon's books in the past few years, but this one is, hands-down, the best. The ending was a little more mystical than I would have liked, but most of the book held together and was enjoyable. |
