50 Teachers Celebration:  Destination Disney

5/31/2022

The end of the month finally arrived, and that meant that I was finally able to set out on my journey to Florida for the Disney-sponsored 50 Teachers Celebration.  There were lots of "magical" experiences planned for the 50th anniversary of Disney World, and the folks at Disney's Imagination Campus were keeping most of it a secret.
But first, I had to get there.  After months of anticipation, I finally started my journey by traveling to the airport in Springfield, Missouri, for a very early flight.  Waking at 2am to drive in the rain for 90 minutes was not my preference, but I do like to take advantage of time, and I knew I would have more time to explore if I could arrive in Orlando as early as possible.

The carpet in Springfield gives the illusion of a river of water streaming down the middle of the concourse, a layer of rocks laying on the banks, and fields of grass to the outside (See the first picture above.).  I had some time to appreciate the art and theme of the airport as I waited for my first flight to Atlanta, Georgia.

One the second leg of my journey (Atlanta to Orlando), one of the panels, above a passenger in front of me and to my right, swung open, revealing the oxygen masks normally reserved for emergencies.  The flight attendants would not touch any of it until the plane landed, so it all just hung up there through the rest of our flight.  That is, until the pilot landed hard on the runway, banging into the concrete with a pretty hefty force that passengers did not appreciate.  When he did, the oxygen masks fell from their compartment, tickling the man's head below (last picture above).  The people around the area were instructed repeatedly that they must not pull on the tubes or masks, as it would cause the rest of the masks in the cabin to drop.  I'm sure they didn't want the delays and inspection of the aircraft that would inevitably follow.

But I was safely on the ground, ready to find my scheduled, pre-paid bus to travel to the exclusive Disney resort, the Grand Floridian.  Since I appreciated the carpet in Springfield, I took an obligatory photo of the tile at the airport in Orlando, as well.  Then, sitting on the bus, I enjoyed getting a glimpse into stops at other Disney resorts on the way to my own.

Unfortunately, this trip came on the heels of a mass school shooting, and many American flags flew at half-staff, making "the happiest place on earth" not quite as happy as we would have liked.

There is more to come, as I continue to report about this one-of-a-kind professional experience.  You can read more about the 50 Teachers Celebration on my Imagination Campus page.

I had the chance to reconnect with a couple of former students in the last couple of weeks.  MISS JORDAN is going to begin teaching in one of our behavior classrooms.  She made a point to visit our end of the hall and reconnect with me after a number of years. She had distinct memories of her time in our class.

MISS DISHMAN (pictured) confidently substituted in a third grade classroom in our hallway, last Monday.  In a couple of years, this one will looking for a full-time teaching position at a school near you.

Retirement:  Peers Surprise Teacher

After school on Monday, my fourth grade team of teachers honored me with a cake reception.  Special decorations adorned yet another room in the school, and I was overwhelmed.  Careful not to become emotional, I accepted the gesture as best I could.
Miss Graham gave me a card with some very touching sentiments.  I loved it.
I couldn't have asked for a better mentor and neighbor as I began teaching.  Not only do we share education-related ideals, but you helped me find my confidence in teaching.  Looking back, I never imagined I would some day hope to become like some old man, but I wish that I can become even a fraction of the educator you are.  I'm so excited for you as you begin your next adventure, but I sure am going to miss you.  I can't express how thankful I am for your guidance.  I will cherish it, and you, forever.  Good luck, Hoggie!  Don't forget us!

The last Monday of the school year brought a surprise for Yours Truly when I was lured into a room to find a big ol' cookie cake and other snacks waiting for us.  Parents had arranged a little celebration for us, complete with decorations hanging from the walls and ceilings.

The final tour of Hoggatt Cave took place yesterday, and it was a whopper.  Four members of the Joplin School Board, along with Incoming Superintendent Kerry Sachetta and Assistant Superintendent Sarah Mwangi, conducted a walk-through of our school to see some of the district programs.  I let Mr. Bozarth know that he could invite the group to tour the cave while they were here.  This group was thrilled and impressed.  Students were honored to make the presentation.

Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is truly a unique addition to the Disney family of parks in Florida.  We love how the place features not only the animals, but also the culture of the continents depicted.  There are some areas where conservation and green policies are preached far too heavily for a vacation theme park, but the shows are excellent and the theming can't be beaten.
Once again, I don't know what the schedule will be like, but I may be shuffled through some of this park on my upcoming visit with the 50 Teachers Celebration.  I really just want to see and do things that the general public doesn't get to see and do.  The mystery around this trip is the majority of what intrigues me about this award.

Gilder Lehrman History Camp:  Enroll Now

5/20/2022

Is there anyone out there who might want to earn a certificate from the Gilder Lehrman Institute?  Incoming third- through fifth-graders may do so by enrolling in the free, virtual History Camp, facilitated online by Yours Truly, starting in July.  Each weekly one-hour class will be centered on one of America's great National Parks.  Here is more information from GLI, along with links to create a free account and enroll in the course:
Picture
Since the Gilder Lehrman Institute launched History School in April 2020, more than 5,000 students have participated in twenty-eight courses with our award-winning teachers. In History School, master teachers present lessons anchored in primary source documents, many from the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s collection of more than 75,000 American history artifacts. Our goal is to engage students and excite them about history so that they leave each lesson more knowledgeable about a new idea, theme, document, or pivotal moment in history.

History School is back for another fun summer of learning! This summer we are offering five virtual courses with opportunities for students in upper elementary, middle, and high school...During History Camp upper elementary school students will travel to different national parks across the country and talk to rangers about the history of their sites. These free courses will provide students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of American history through innovative lessons and activities.

We can’t wait for you to join us! For more information, please email [email protected].
Students must have a Gilder Lehrman account to register for a History School course. Log in or create a free account here.
In case you missed it, the description of our six-session course follows (along with other information):
Prepare for adventure! Put on your virtual hiking boots, find your binoculars, and bring plenty of drinking water. You are about to discover some of America's greatest treasures in a trek through its national parks. You're headed to six historical and natural parks to sample what the US has to offer. Connect live with rangers at the sites and learn more about your own courage, impact, responsibility, legacy, resilience, and vision along the way.

Each week, students will "visit" a different National Park Service site from historic sites to natural parks. They will get to learn about the history of the land, why it was designated as a park site, and what it would be like to visit today. Dale Hoggatt, the Master Teacher for this program, will be joined by a park ranger from each site every week as a special guest. Like past History Camps, students will have a hands-on challenge every week that might include a craft, writing a reflection, or other activity.
Key Information
  • The course begins on Tuesday, July 5, 2022.
  • Classes will occur once a week for six weeks. There will not be a class on Thursday, July 26.
  • Classes will begin at [3:00 pm CT].
  • Weekly classes are 60 minutes in length on Zoom. These sessions will incorporate a combination of lectures, activities conducted on the Zoom chat, polls, Q&As, and discussions.

Enrollment opened on May 16, but there is an unlimited number of spots available for the courses.  Here is a reminder of the schedule (along with a little further description):

Around 25 retirees from Joplin Schools had the day off yesterday for a luncheon at the Administration building.  A larger-than-normal number of us are retiring from Cecil Floyd.  Mrs. Francis, Mrs, Timpe, and I received engraved acrylic plaques from the school district and enjoyed a meal with Principal Bozarth and Assistant Principal Garrett.  Mr. Garrett even brought us Sonic drinks to enhance our meal which was catered by Mythos. Incoming Superintendent Kerry Sachetta emceed the event.

Senior Walk-Through

For the past few years, seniors from Joplin High have ridden buses to their elementary and middle schools to walk through the hallways "one last time".  The event allows them to connect with some of their teachers who haven't seen them for a long while.  It also intends to encourage younger students to keep charging forward.  Recently, we were thrilled to host the event for this year's seniors.
Picture
Mr.  Culbertson even stepped out of retirement for a few minutes to be here for his own former students.  He and I engaged in a few "magical" shenanigans of our own, entertaining the fourth grade Hoggatteers, as well as a whole bunch of seniors (Hoggatteers and otherwise).  We have a wonderful routine in which I can read Mr. C's mind in traveling on a "road trip" to cities chosen by students.  I have no idea where we are going, but through the process of telepathy that we perfected after over two decades of working side by side, I can deduce where we are headed. It was a great time to connect the dots between fourth graders and twelfth graders and amaze both groups at the same time.

We, of course, wish the seniors well as they embark on new adventures.

EPCOT

I really enjoy the international portion of EPCOT.  The areas are so well-themed, with creative entertainment and features being added all the time.  Not surprisingly, I'm not as interested in thrill rides as much as some people are, but I do love a well-executed dark ride.  There are some secret doors in this place, as well, and when I open them they reveal amazing, air-conditioned museum displays for some of the countries represented!
When I am at Walt Disney World, later this month, I don't know if there will be time scheduled for EPCOT or not, but there are some specifics in the park I will be interested in taking a peek into.

We didn't get to go to Hollywood Studios on our last visit, but my wife and I really enjoyed that park when it first opened.  We were able to visit there on our honeymoon in December of 1991.  That whole park has experienced major renovations since that time, so it would also be interesting.  We loved the street entertainers and subtle theming.
