Just outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the town of Catoosa. It's really easy to pass by without stopping in Catoosa. Since we were in the area recently, however, we took a swing just off of Interstate 44 to see the famous Route 66 Blue Whale. The whale is an icon of Route 66 and a symbol of simpler times. Sitting in a small country pond, the whale is the centerpiece of a bygone swimming hole where kids of all ages enjoyed summer days jumping and sliding out of the whale into the cool water. Swimming is no longer allowed - an obvious sign that the times have changed. A fear of litigation is ever-present today, as well as concerns for safety and health. Oh, for the times when we didn't worry as much about such things. | |
