While the principles of teaching don't really change (The methods of engagement are pretty constant.), the variety of topics can lend themselves to unexpected observations. In my last round of observations of student teachers for Pittsburg State University, I found myself in a STEM woodshop, a middle school English class, a weightlifting gym, a personal finance review, an elementary PE course, a third grade fractions review, and a primary rhythm class. Shortly afterward, I was able to get into the grading process and look at all of my students' work for their professional semester. That, too, is eye opening. In combination with the on-site observations, and in some cases speaking with their cooperating teachers in the classrooms, one can get a pretty good picture of where their strengths and weaknesses lie. I can also tell where the program at PSU appears to concentrate. Here's to these newest graduates and their futures. |
