Core Behaviors Breakdown:  Participate

3/29/2017

As we move forward in our discussion, we come to the final of Joplin Schools' four Core Behaviors. In Participate, I have to ask questions of my students:

  • What are you thinking when you are asked to do something you do not want to do?
  • What are you thinking when you are asked to work with other students with whom you do not Get Along?
  • How do you react to lessons when you do not feel well?
  • How do you show interest in something in which you are otherwise not interested?

All of these come into play when I am sitting as a student, as well - whether in a professional development setting, a faculty meeting, or a teacher forum of some sort.  Sadly, the same is true when I sit in a Bible class or worship service.

There are always times when it might be easier to sit and let the activity go along with out me.  Around me. It might be easier to let my peers handle the situation without my help.  It's especially easy when I don't know what's going on.

So here I have developed the S.P.I.K.E.S. breakdown of the Participate behavior that is expected of Joplin students.  Rather than simply state the expectation and expect participation from my students, I understand that it is important to teach the skills involved.  In this, I hope my students will be better equipped for class and for the future.

Happy Birthday, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft

3/28/2017

On the anniversary of his birth, we recognize the contributions of Henry Schoolcraft.
Research about Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and fill out your Happy Birthday, Missouri sheet.
Henry Rowe Schoolcraft wrote the first published account of the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. He introduced the region to the world, but his writing helped establish enduring negative stereotypes of the Ozarks and its inhabitants.
Define and remember the word stereotype.

What's kinds of stereotypes might there have been about people in the Ozarks?  Do those stereotypes still exist? Could people have stereotypes about you...
  • because of your red hair?
  • because of your blond hair?
  • because of your skin color?
  • because of your religion?
  • because of where you come from?
  • because of the way you talk?
  • because of your abilities?

Lead Mining

In the summer of 1818 Schoolcraft arrived in Potosi, the heart of Missouri Territory’s lead mining region. Schoolcraft surveyed the area’s mining and smelting operations before he decided to investigate rumors of rich lead deposits in the White River Valley.
The history of lead mining might interest you, especially since you live in the heart of one of the biggest fields of galena in the state of Missouri. Henry Schoolcraft might not have known everything about lead mining, but he worked in some of the mines in our state and wrote about what he learned when he was there. Watch this video and the read more about Missouri's state mineral, galena and find out how it is related to lead.

The Mississippi River

In 1832 Schoolcraft led an expedition to Lake Itasca, the source of the headwaters of the Mississippi River, in what is now Minnesota. He published an account of the expedition, Narrative of an Expedition Through the Upper Mississippi to Itasca Lake.

Just the Facts

Let this peppy little video (below) introduce you to the Mississippi River. Here is a lot of information in less than two minutes.  Hopefully, there is enough here to get you interested in learning more.

The Great Floods of 1927 and 1993

We can't talk about the Mississippi River without mentioning flooding. With that much water flowing from various tributaries, all headed to the mouth of the river at the Gulf of Mexico, there is always the danger of flooding.

Two years, 1927 and 1993, are particularly memorable. In the four videos below, you will be an eye witness to these two disastrous floods.  The videos on the left show first-hand flood footage, while the videos on the right are reflections on the floods.

How are the videos on the left different than the ones on the right?  How are they similar?  Why are they call great floods?

The Great River Road

It would seem that Schoolcraft was successful when he wrote about places and the people who lived in those places.  Let's consider the 10 states that are directly affected by the Mississippi River.  In pairs or groups, take some time to study one of the 10 states in the map (left), and make a poster to share with the class to interest others in visiting the state and meeting the people who live there.

Crash Course:  Optimism

3/27/2017

There is a battle between the negative and the positive, and sometimes those negative folks do everything they can to pull down those who have a positive spirit...And my friend, if there is one thing that I know about negative people, it is that misery loves company.  Negative people love to recruit.  These misery evangelists are working hard to bring others into their fold, so we must work even harder to spread our gospel of positivity.
Picture
Guilty.

Aren't we all guilty of being negative from time to time?  Kim Bearden, author of Crash Course, is right when she says we love to recruit when we are in our negative moods. Misery loves company.  I suppose I am sort of a passive-aggressive when I get this way, wanting people to see my side of things.

And yet, there are some who don't see it when they are negative all the time.  It's easy to wind them up and watch them spin around the room, casting sparks off of themselves willy-nilly, shooting them toward random targets.  They curse.  They long for after-school drinks.  And yes, they recruit.

We must search for ways to recover from the downs.  We know that we are down, and we understand that it feels better to be up...but we sit idly, stewing in negativity.  It is a battle that doesn't make sense.

Then, there are people who are sappy sweet on the outside - giving off a false positive - and tart on the inside. They project Good mornings all over the place, but by the lunch period they fill a completely negative role.  Often these are the teachers who are frustrated over a particular student who has failed to react to their sap.

How can we be truly happy?  How can we appreciate the students who sit before us in those little chairs every day? What can we plan?  To whom can we vent?  There's no reason to fake our smiles if we have genuine ones. We don't accept negative attitudes from our kids, so why do we allow ourselves to be so permanently discouraged.

Optimism can be the hardest lesson to learn.

Students are often called upon to read "chorally".
That is, they read together
simultaneously
as a group.

Repeating this practice assists young readers with reading fluency - the speed, accuracy,
and inflection of  oral reading.

Why not, since it's called "choral" reading anyway, actually read the chorus of a song?

Core Behaviors Breakdown:  Follow Instructions

3/24/2017

As we continue to break down the Core Behaviors for our school district, we come to Follow Instructions.  One might think this is self-explanatory, but we quickly find that the opposite is true.  The teacher cannot afford to simply tell kids to follow instructions.  It's not enough to expect kids to follow instructions without teaching them how to do so.

I recently had the idea to break down the Core Behaviors so they might be taught more explicitly.  It will be nice to have the graphic below, with its R.O.T.A.T.E. acronym to assist in teaching, practicing, and reinforcing this expectation.

Book:  Book Scavenger

3/23/2017

Book Scavenger is the first book from author Jennifer Chambliss Bertman.  She does a fine job of keeping the reader's attention.  I found myself wanting more to happen sooner in the book, but once the story gets going, about half way into the book, I quickly discovered that I needed to keep reading - even if it meant I would be sacrificing sleep.  This is a thicker book than fourth graders are used to, but it's not too deep for most.  Try it on for size.
Picture
From the author's website:
For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it’s the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon her arrival, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked and is now in a coma, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend James discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself, and might contain the only copy of his mysterious new game.

Racing against time, Emily and James rush from clue to clue, desperate to figure out the secret at the heart of Griswold’s new game—before those who attacked Griswold come after them too.

Crash Course:  Talent

3/22/2017

None of us is perfect, but when we find where we fit, our sense of purpose begins to take shape.  Often the biggest problem is that we are trying to fit into the wrong place or to connect to another piece that isn'e meant for us.  Some of us don't even get started making the puzzle - we are still rattling around in our boxes, afraid to see the wonder that we can help to create. We must seek to nurture our gifts and use them to their fullest.  There is no one on the planet exactly like you.  Each of us is a one-of-a-kind limited edition.
Picture
How can a person encourage another person to explore undiscovered talents?  Call it motivation if you'd like.  Call it inspiration.  Hey, call it visionary if you want to.  The fact is, sometimes getting a fourth grader to do things can be difficult - especially when s/he comes to the teacher with head in hands and staring at his/her shoes, without even a modicum of desire to overcome struggles or learn new things.

He thinks he is as good as he will ever be.  He is satisfied that he has learned everything he can learn - that anything new is overload and impossible - and I, the teacher, am expected to work some kind of magic to get him to think differently.  I wouldn't call it magic, but I would recognize that my part of the process does require some finesse.

Sadly, I don't think any teacher can honestly put that finesse, or magic, into words.  It is certainly a combination of any number of people skills, teaching skills, personality, and perseverance.  When Kim Bearden talks about getting students to stop rattling around in their boxes and change their fears into wonders, she is spot on...but it takes the rest of the chapters in her book (Crash Course) to achieve it.  Still, I would like for her to add a chapter entitled Finesse.

For the past six years, I have changed many of the old ways I have approached education.  I haven't thrown out the baby with the bathwater, but I have changed my approach in significant ways.  On a number of occasions I have discovered some of that so-called magic with particular students.

One student might be defined as a thug by people who knew him, but at some point, he became the class' favorite peer.  Through an arduous and painful process, riddled with stumbles, he became compassionate and selfless, and he discovered in himself a character he never knew existed.

During another year, a boy of small stature did everything he could to emulate the gang members he saw on TV, but after a heartfelt connection with a teacher who was willing to listen to him, he became interested in academic improvement.

Still another year brought a child who lived in poverty, hated women, and was generally angry.  He was the boy everyone dreaded.  He did not bathe regularly, and had terrible habits.  When dealing with adults and peers alike, this kid would melt down completely.  He slipped easily into violence and self mutilation.  Yet somehow, with explicit teaching, he awakened something deep down within himself.  He learned how to look people in the eyes and firmly shake their hands.  He learned to call adults ma'am and sir.  He learned to be slow to anger and slow to speak.

I know Mrs. Bearden is talking about awakening different kinds of talent - public speaking or singing perhaps - but for these three boys, the box that confined them was a tight one.  I want my students to know that what defines them now does not have to define them in the future.  The secret to such redefining is to remove confinement.

You can have an impact on others that you might not have realized simply because you are choosing to focus on things that you think you can't do instead of the things that you can do.  You are enough.  Forget your failures, forget your inadequacies - focus on the gifts that you do have and how you can choose to use them to the fullest.  You have something to offer this world.  You, my friend, are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Core Behavior Breakdown:  Get Along

3/20/2017

One of Joplin Schools' four Core Behaviors is Get Along.  While much has been written about explicitly teaching the first behavior of Greeting Others, breaking down the other three expectations has been more difficult. I have come to appreciate the need for finding the specific steps involved for students to master these behaviors, so I wondered if this one could be taught in a similar fashion.

Of course it can't.  It's a different animal, and might need to be approached in a slightly different way.  Look, however, at the acronym I created below:  STARFALL.  This breaks down the art of conversation, which I believe is central to getting along with others.  I am most definitely not strong in this area myself, so I will continue to work on these skills alongside my students.

Programmable, Time-Traveling, Story-Telling Robots

3/19/2017

It's time to put these little fellows to the test.  I've just received three Ozobots to use in our classroom.  After playing with them on my own for a while, I'm still figuring out how to use them for educational purposes.
I do not and have not taught coding to my students, but Ozobot makes this possible online or with an app called Ozoblockly.  After putting the code together, the robot is held up to the monitor for some quick light bursts to receive the programming.  More than one Ozobot can be programmed the same to synchronize their movements.

Ozobot will also follow a line drawn on the iPad or on paper (using markers).  Students may also embed short color codes in the line to make the robot do tricks.
I am more interested in using our Ozobots to teach history, science, reading, writing, and math.  I already have some ideas for how they can help us with storytelling and history, and I am looking at examples of possible math and science instruction.  People know I like to think outside the box, so they won't be surprised when I pull these guys out and gear them up (They might roll their eyes, but they won't be surprised.).  We'll definitely have to post some videos on the website when we make them (whether it be for this year's class or next).

World Records

Did you know the Guinness Book of World Records was started in Ireland?  The first edition was published in 1955, when Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of the Guinness Brewery, had an argument about which bird was the fastest. When Beaver found no answers in any of the books he looked at, the idea for a book of records was born.

Lucky Charms

You can definitely see a pattern to the old Lucky Charms cereal commercials.

Make a storyboard for for a couple of these to establish your understanding of the pattern.

Then, with your group, create your own Lucky Charms commercial. Who will play the part of Lucky? Who will be the kids chasing him? Remember a TV advertisement is usually about 30 seconds long.

You might be wondering what fraction of Lucky Charms cereal is marshmallows.  What fraction is green clovers? How might we figure the answers to our fractional questions? When you add up all the fractions, they should make up one whole box - and part of a complete breakfast.
