This year's Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute will include a variety of activities for the participants.  The second day's schedule is going to wear us out with all kinds of captivating activities and presentations.

I'm really anticipating getting to see some significantly historical sites on the tours for Tuesday, while at the same time meeting other teachers from around the country, sharing some professional tales, and getting plenty of exercise.
7–8:45 a.m. Breakfast

9:10 a.m. Walk to Historic Area

9:30–10:35 a.m. Eighteenth-Century Agriculture Tobacco was the lifeblood of Virginia’s colonial economy. Investigate how this 13-month crop was cultivated and transported, as well as the role of enslaved Virginians working in the cultivation of this “green gold.”

10:35–11:00 a.m. Break and Travel

11–11:45 a.m. History Mystery Use objects and other primary sources to determine how this mystery site was originally used, who may have been here, how it connected to the larger Williamsburg and Virginia communities, and how its economy could be impacted by the American Revolution.

12–12:45 p.m. Capitol Tour Tour the seat of government in Virginia during the colony’s transition to a commonwealth. Learn about the founding principles of our government and your rights and responsibilities as citizens of the Republic.

1:00 p.m. Lunch

2:45–3:30 p.m. American Indian Experience During the eighteenth century, Cherokee delegations traveled to Williamsburg to negotiate trade agreements and alliances. Members of local tribes, such as the Nottoway and Pamunkey, also came to Williamsburg as students, peddlers of wares, and enlistees for Virginia forces in times of conflict. View colonial Virginia through American Indian eyes as you experience how their delegations represented an abundance of distinct cultures, languages, religions, and unique world views. Learn how American Indians’ world was impacted by the British Virginians and the impact they had on the lives of the colonists.

3:30 p.m. Break and Travel

4:00 p.m. Freedom’s Paradox Tour Examine the evolution of slavery and how patriots like Peyton Randolph relied on it to build a city, a colony, and eventually a nation. Explore the paradox of the institution of slavery and the movement for independence by looking at the experiences of the free and enslaved members of the Randolph household.

5:00–5:10 p.m. Watch the Fife and Drum Corps

5:30 p.m. Master Teacher Application Session Your Master Teacher shares strategies for bringing history to life in the classroom using the experiences and materials gained from participating in the Teacher Institute.

6:15 p.m. Dinner on Own

Another Titanic Trip

I'm always thrilled to hear of students who take the learning beyond our classroom walls.

Another student spent some time with the Titanic over his Spring Break, last week.  His mom sent me some pictures of their visit to the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, where it looks like he had an opportunity to see some of the things we talked about in class the week prior.

They also attended a dinner performance at Dolly Parton's Stampede and came back with an experience that will create memories.

Missouri History Teacher of the Year:  Luncheon

3/29/2022

It's hard to believe such a fuss.  On one cold day of teacher inservice, the lunch wasn't half bad...and the school honored me with a luncheon to celebrate being named the Missouri History Teacher of the Year.  I failed to report this on the website when it happened - and I failed to acquire any photos of the delicious food and the crowd of people who attended.
Picture
The decorations for the occasion were artifacts and replicas from my own collection.  As the event took place in the school cafeteria, one of the earliest American flags, paying tribute to a British pedigree, hung over the entry door.

A table inside the entrance held Colonial cash and other objects to inspire visitors.  Some antique teaching materials and journal articles were also on hand.

Decorations around the serving tables included quotes from historical figures, and other tables held informational tents, as well as other interesting "artifacts" to set the mood.

The food for our school staff, as well as school board members and administrators from the central office, was catered by the Red Onion Cafe, here in Joplin, and desserts were brought from Big R's.  Dozens of people were able to join us for a filling and delectable meal on a day when teacher inservices could use a little shot to the morale nerve.
As I have said many times since being named as the recipient for this award, I am continually thankful to have been honored.  In addition to my own $1000 prize, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History also provided the expenses for this event.

Gilder Lehrman Summer History Camp

As a Master Teacher with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (GLI), I have been asked to lead a six-week course for incoming third- through fifth graders, this summer.  The program is called History Camp, and this year, there will be a 45-minute long session, once a week, to teach "campers" about National Parks in the U.S.
While the parks themselves have not yet been determined, there will be a variety of locations, chosen both for their historical significance and for their natural beauty.  Denali National Park is the first to be confirmed.

I've written the description for the course as follows:
Prepare for adventure!  Put on your hiking boots, find your binoculars, and bring plenty of drinking water.  You are about to discover some of America's greatest treasures in a trek through its national parks.  You're headed to six historical and natural parks to sample what the U.S. has to offer.  Connect live with rangers at the sites and learn more about your own courage, impact, responsibility, legacy, resilience, and vision along the way.
Every week, I will lead a live, online session with students from around the nation and around the world.  We will look at the parks from historical perspectives, making sure to visit some of the genuine documents and images from the GLI collection.  As an added bonus, I will have a guest on each broadcast - a ranger from the park up for study.  Finally, every session will include a physical project or craft to awaken the spirit of the study for the students.
GLI has offered me a rich and robust way to stay in touch with my educational roots even after retirement.  I still get to stretch my teaching muscles to touch the minds of students and history buffs in a rewarding and satisfying manner, while also continuing to learn about American history myself.

Retirement:  Another Last

3/26/2022

It seems we are in the season of lasts.  The latest "last" involves parent conferences.  I have now conducted the last of them for my 32-year career as a public school teacher.  I can't say that I will completely miss holding conferences with parents, but they hardly the worst part of the job.
Picture
Very seldom did I have a parent conference that did not go well.  I can think of a could of times when there seemed to be a disconnect or a miscommunication, but for the most part, parents have been full of compliments.  It was always a confidence-booster to hear things like, "He loves your class," or, "She always tells us about the activities in your class."

I really missed the practice during the COVID season.  In 2021, we had to do our conferences over the phone. Being a human being who despises talking to people on the telephone, the experience was torture.  I was so happy to be able to attack the practice in person, for my final round.

How many more "lasts" will I have for 2022?  Last month was the last classroom party - something I will not miss next year.  In a couple of months, I will quickly experience several other lasts, as well.

Seacil Floyd:  Family Field Trip

At least one Hoggatteer visited the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, during Spring Break.  According to her mom (who also provided the picture here), this student "was full of Titanic facts during our tour of the museum."  It must have been exciting to see some of the genuine artifacts from the infamous ship after spending a week studying about its demise.  This very accurate reproduction of the the Grand Staircase is only part of the presentation at the museum.

This student's mom went on to report, "I loved watching [her] face light up as she entered each room."  I can only imagine.  As for myself, I always love hearing about students' who have sought out more experiences based on topics we've learned in class.

Seacil Floyd:  Titanic Poses

3/24/2022

With our Titanic spin on last week's Under the Sea theme like, we had to try to reproduce the iconic "King of the World" scene from the blockbuster James Cameron movie.  On the back porch of the school, overlooking the vast ocean playground, is a corner of the railing that (with a little imagination) becomes the bow of the grand ship.  There, students were able to feel the brisk wind in their hair as they posed, arms out and eyes aloft just like Jack and Rose.
Picture
Some of last year's Hoggatteers were watching from nearby and wanted to get in on the fun, so they excitedly posed at the bow, as well, feeling like royalty indeed.

Here are the last pictures of the school transformation.  I wanted to take some better pictures on one last pass-through of the decor.  The teachers actually had a fun time making last week special for the kids.

We're very proud of our presentation of the theme for last week's school transformation.  The fourth-grade teacher team chose to take a very different approach to the theme Under the Sea by swimming over to the Titanic sinking.  I finally took more time to get some better photos and a video that show off the features of our little stretch of the hallway.

We watched the Voices of the Titanic video from the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, last week.  This was a very interesting readers theater presentation about three of the survivors of the Titanic sinking.  Our appreciation is extended to the museum for sending us some materials to use with students during last week's special theme.

A graduate of our class competed as a sixth grader in the same contest.  Both Hoggatteers were eliminated in the same round, and the next round began with the final ten contestants.

The first day's schedule for the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute is focused mostly focused on a visit to nearby Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne.  The day should be a blast of information and experience.

After waiting for almost three years for this experience, I want to see the place where the first enslaved people were forced into service on our continent.  I want to see where Captain John Smith met Pocahontas.  I want to see the archaeological sites of Jamestown Fort.  I'm ready for some walking and some study of the site.

It's going to be a full, enriching time.
7–8:15 a.m. Breakfast

8:15 a.m. Bus to Jamestown

9:00 a.m. Jamestown Settlement Guided tour of Paspahegh Town, ships, and James Fort and then explore on your own time.

11:00 a.m. Lunch

12:00 p.m. Bacon vs. Berkeley Analyze primary documents from Bacon’s Rebellion. Was Nathaniel Bacon right to rebel? Should his followers be put to death for treason? Defend your side in a debate before the King’s representatives.

1:00 p.m. Travel to Historic Jamestowne

1:15–3:30 p.m. Historic Jamestowne Enjoy a guided tour of the site, talk with archaeologists, and then time to explore around the site and in the Archaearium.

3:30 p.m. Exploration Time

4:00 p.m. Return to Williamsburg

4:30 p.m. Indentured Servitude to Slavery Chart the development of the labor system in the Virginia colony, from one primarily reliant on indentured servants, to one that depended on, and codified, racebased enslaved labor.

5:15 p.m. Orientation Walk
