The Mighty Miss Malone is the last of the 2015 Mark Twain Award nominees I needed to read. It is also one of the longer stories on the list.
With all the success of Curtis's previous book, Bud, Not Buddy (which, strangely, I have never read), Christopher Paul Curtis has broken down and written a sequel.
From the publisher's website:
The Mighty Miss Malone is the story of Deza, the smartest girl in her class in Gary, Indiana, singled out by teachers for a special path in life. When her beloved father leaves to find work, Deza, Mother, and her older brother Jimmie go in search of him, and end up in a Hooverville outside Flint, Michigan. The twists and turns of their story reveal the devastation of the Depression and prove that Deza truly is the Mighty Miss Malone.
This one is well written. Christopher Paul Curtis depicted the time period and the female lead character very well. This one is one of the better books on this year's list.
