We have an interesting line-up for this summer's higosty camp for the Gilder Lehrman Institute in New York City. I'm on board to facilitate this introduction of our national parks to students entering third- through fifth- grades in the fall. I already announced four of the parks, but the final two have finally accepted. |
Third on the list is a lesser-known national park, the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Montana. Ten million acres of open ranch land represent the nature of cattlemen in American history, while also preserving the natural traits of the land.
The final presentation of the six-session camp is one that hits closer to home - a park now known as the Gateway Arch National Park. The newly-renovated museum under the Arch tells the story of the Gateway to the West, culminating with the symbolic gateway, the Arch itself. These two properties, managed by the National Park Service, will complement one another in a cause-effect relationship. While I am familiar with the latter, I'm going to learn as much as the students as we dig into the former. |
