Most people do not realize that George Washington's estate is not, and never has been, owned by the government. In fact, it was acquired in the late 19th century by a group of ladies known as the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. This group of concerned citizens was disappointed at the condition of the first president's house. It was run down to the point that it would only be a short while before the building completely collapsed. The roof over the piazza was being held up with sailboat masts. | |
I'll continue to report about my summer residency at the estate in the days to come.
