You probably didn't know we had our own river monsters, but now you do. Sleep well, children.
Sometimes the most intriguing information comes from unexpected and impromptu scenes at the side of the road. After a ferry across the Mississippi River, we noticed these unnatural openings in the rock (We were correct in assuming they were the remnants of old mining operations.), but as we passed, we also noticed an interesting bit of graffiti and a historical marker. Curiosity drove us, so we turned around to check it out. It turns out that these types of paintings on the rock are warning signs about strange bird-monsters (I'm assuming mythological in nature.) that will eat humans. The legend about the so-called piasa was already in place when Marquette and Jolliet explored the river area in the 17th century.
