Well, here you go. The iconic Electric Banana, the Nacho Truck, the Neon Lemon, or whatever people may call it is no more. No, I did not hit a tree! Yesterday morning, on the way to school, a gentleman rolled through a red light and found himself in the path of this bright yellow monster. With nowhere to go, the collision took me into the oncoming lane and onto the sidewalk between two trees. The airbag deployed, but I didn't realize it. All I knew was someone was blaring their horn. Oh, that was me. With the horn sounding, it didn't take long for people in the neighborhood to come onto their front porches to witness the aftermath. Witnesses called 9-1-1, and sheriff cars, highway patrol officers, a firetruck, and an ambulance were on the scene before you could say, We don't talk about Bruno. | I really didn't feel any pain or problem following the accident, but I knew that deep breaths weren't feeling quite right, so I ended up in the Emergency Room for x-rays and an EKG. In the end, everything check out all right - just some rib contusions that the doc says might get sore today and tomorrow. I bought that little truck the year I started teaching in Joplin, and ironically, I won't drive it again now that I am in my last year of teaching. She has been with me through terrorist attacks and tornado cleanup, through the birth of my two children, as well as many losses. She was there during many accomplishments and many mistakes. But enough about Ol' Yeller and me. The thing that really cheered me up happened when I visited the school after my time at the hospital. What really brightened my day was the reaction that my students had when I visited the school to let them know I was all right. I didn't stay very long, but the reception I got was enough to drive me through the rest of the daylight hours. I love seeing the compassion come out of my students, and it gives me hope for their futures. It makes me feel like I have given them a piece of myself that may stick with them for a while. I know it's my last year in a regular classroom, but I must admit these are the moments I will miss the most. |
