We were thrilled to finally present our 2019 Salute to Veterans to both student and adult audiences at Cecil Floyd. The show was deeply emotional, with fourth graders singing their hearts out and songs with pointed purpose and meaningful message behind them. One goal of the fourth grade presentation is for students to appreciate the true meaning of the Veterans Day holiday. We could easily sing patriotic songs about the freedoms of our land, hearkening back to days when our nation struggled to gain life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Students in our room who had roles outside of singing chorally are as follows: AMELIAH, DAVID, and LIAM stood at the front doors to greet our adult visitors. They shook hands and gave flag stickers to the veterans they met. JAH-KORI and KARLIE sang important solos in our performance in back-to-back songs. Their voices were ideal for the songs the introduced. LANDON addressed the crowd and recognized the veterans in our audience and thanked them for their military service, and AMELIAH also handled all of our lighting cues during the show. Students from the other three classes did a fine job with their parts as well. We appreciate them all. After each performance, our veterans and families were invited to a reception in their honor - to have a cookie and some punch, but also to give our students an opportunity to greet them and share conversation. During this time, I love to stand back and watch my class at work: they are truly at their best when they are practicing the soft skills we have worked on since Day One. That is truly Veterans Day gold. |
