Sermon: John the Locksmith

My sermon begins at 30:20.

We have arrived at the last class in this session of Made in Six classes. We began four weeks ago with "God Made the World". We followed that with "God Made Plants" and "God Made Birds". This week, we'll discover "God Made Sea Creatures. Here's a video while we await others to arrive.

As with previous classes, this one is anchored with an Early Reader book from Apologetics Press. We will read the book in class, but for this one, there is also a video available.

Two very fascinating creatures of the sea are the cuttlefish and the hagfish. These aren't addressed in the book, but we will use the videos to keep student interest as we progress.

Then, some activities will arrive to keep us moving. How do you hide? How do you defend yourself against predators? Can you move like some of the creatures in our book?

That hagfish! How would you like it if slime came out of your body instead of sweat? That could make for one big mess! Still, if it's not too sticky, slime can be a lot of fun to play with. Let's make a batch before we leave.

God Made Birds

Here we are for the third installment of our Made by God series for K-2 students. The craft for this one is relatively simple - decorating miniature birdhouses - but first we'll read the book, God Made Birds, and watch three or four videos from Apologetics Press. While we wait for everyone to arrive, enjoy this bird video.

If you're enrolled in the course, please join us for our final week, at 6:30 next Tuesday, as we explore God Made Sea Creatures. I've heard something about making slime: I wonder if the rumors could be true.

God Made Plants

We meet at the church of Christ building in Carthage, Missouri, starting at 6:30pm on Tuesdays in September of 2024, our Made in Six classes. These Christian apologetics classes are for K-2 children who want to know more about God's pattern of creation.

This is the second of the four classes in this series of classes called God Made the World. Our topic for this week is "God Made Plants". The book we will read comes from the Apologetics Press Early Reader Series, and every student in the class will receive a copy of the book to take home (In fact, every student will receive a copy of one of these books every week during the course.).

While we wait for everyone to arrive and get settled, you may want to look at this video which shows plants growing from seeds to maturity in time lapse.

Trees, flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Stems, leaves, petals, and roots.

The largest plants are trees. In fact, the largest living things on the planet are trees. We'll pause for a moment during the reading of the book to view this video (below) about the largest of them all - Sequoia Trees.

One of the most fascinating plants of all must be this Stinking Corpse Lily. It is a parasite plant that grows a bloom that is three feet wide. Unlike the fragrance of the flowers we're usually accustomed to, this one smells like rotting meat. The petals even resemble hunks of meat with maggots crawling all over them. Sound appealing?

Actually, it's all part of God's wonderful creation, and it was designed to survive in just the right conditions. Insects are attracted to rotting meat, so they are also attracted to this giant flower, and that allows the pollen to be transferred to other Stinking Corpse Lilies. It's a perfectly valid design for this plant's reproduction and survival.

God has set forth patterns in His creation that tell us something about God Himself. He is a Designer who puts great thought into His designs.

We have our own life-sized version of the Stinking Corpse Lily - without the nasty smell - and you will have the chance to get your picture taken with it to help you see the size of the thing. The pictures will be shared with parents in email.

As we do this, we'll also have an interesting craft activity for you that you'll be able to take home. It will help you remember our class.

After this class, we will be halfway through this installment of the Made by God series. Be sure to attend next week when we look at "God Made Birds" and the following week as we consider "God Made Sea Creatures".
