Mineral Observations

Project Home

Instruction

Why is a mineral a mineral and a rock a rock?  What's the difference? Discuss your ideas about this.

We will now explore the mineral world by conducting extensive tests on twelve specimens.
You will need to explore some vocabulary before continuing:
  • Hardness
  • Shape
  • Streak
  • Feel
  • Magnetism
  • Light
  • Luster
  • Smell
  • Cleavage
  • Other Observations
Create 12 pages to document your findings about the minerals provided. Each mineral should have its own page, and it should look similar to the page pictured at right (Click the image to enlarge it.).

The teacher will explain and demonstrate a series of experiments your group will use to draw conclusions about your minerals.
