Animals on Display

MODULE 11

Project Home

Instruction

This step has three parts.  In one part, you will train an animal to perform for the class. In the second part, you will design a zoo-like display for World's Fair 2.0.  Finally, later, we may do a measurement activity.
First, read the following webpage about a trained horse, who was said to "read, write, spell, add, sort mail, tell time, use a cash register, and even cite the Bible":  Jim Key.
Picture
After reading the article, pair up with a classmate.  One of you will be the trainer, while the other is an animal.  Choose an animal, and make up "tricks" or astounding feats that the animal will do for the trainer.  Write a quick script, and rehearse your "show".  Perform it for the class when called upon to do so.

Given the time, we will look at some activities with the growth of animals.  This activity will involve measurement
Learning Intentions
  1. [Math] Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines.  Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
  2. [Math] Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size.  Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
  3. Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including [length and weight].  Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ...

Success Criteria
  • Refer to your knowledge of geometric terms
  • Follow directions to draw specific designated items

Next, please read this webpage about a display of exotic animals at the fair:
Ostrich Farm
Next, let's make an exhibit for the World's Fair 2.0 that includes exotic animals from around the world.  You must follow the following guidelines in your design.
  • Get a piece of grid paper from the teacher
  • For this project, you must use your paper in the horizontal position
  • Place a compass rose in the upper right corner of the page
  • In the center of the page, place a circle
  • Include four pathways that are parallel to each other
  • Include one path that is perpendicular to the four parallel paths
  • Include one path that intersects at least two streets but is not perpendicular
  • Include three rectangular buildings to house the monkeys
  • Include four square reptile buildings
  • Include one trapezoidal building for pachyderms
  • Include one 360-degree zoo-themed restaurant
  • In the center of the exhibit must be a rhombus-shaped stage to be used for trained animal shows
  • Both sides of the stage need tropical plants,  parallelograms with ten plants in each
  • Draw one ranger with an isosceles triangle for a hat (on the left side of title)
  • Draw another ranger with a right triangle for a (on the right side of title)
  • Label all parts of your map with original names (Name buildings and pathways)
  • Color your diagram brightly and neatly
  • Put the name of architect/cartographer (You!) in the bottom right corner
  • Use rulers to measure length
  • Use scales to measure weight
  • Record and convert measurements

    Before You Advance

Always refer to the Learning Intentions and
Success Criteria for help along the way!
