Read the information on this webpage:
Constructing the Fair.
As you read, pay close attention to
the building process and building materials in the paragraph titled Ready-Mixed Grandeur.
During this step, we will draw conclusions based on some science experiments.  Take detailed chronological notes for these three experiments in your notebook (on three separate pages).

  • First, similar to the 1904 exposition, we will make some small "statues" using Plaster or Paris.  

  • After some time passes, we will explore the effects of rain on our statues.

  • Why did the builders use hemp in the construction of many fair's features?  We shall see when we make some "bird nests" with mud and others with mud mixed with grass.

Success Criteria
  • Make an inference based on a specific area of a text
  • Find evidence that supports your inference
  • Quote the text to support your inference
  • Organize a sequential (time-order) writing to report the process of a science experiment
  • Use focused paragraphs in your writing
  • Include specific information from a single experiment in your writing
  • Use at least one quote from someone in the classroom in your writing
  • Include transitional words in your paragraphs
  • In a concluding paragraph, report the findings of your chosen experiment
  • Carefully follow directions to complete three science experiments
  • Draw conclusions based on our experiments, and include your new knowledge in your informational narrative
