These were symbols of prosperity. Read Psalm 104:15f.
Art AppreciationExamine the artwork (Jean-François Millet, 1857). What do you notice? What do you wonder? Grain The two most important grains in Israel were wheat and barley. The agricultural process is a system that includes nine steps (plus consumption). We will discuss this process in person and use the following videos and Bible passages to help us understand everything in context. |
Art AppreciationExamine the artwork. What do you notice? What do you wonder? Grapes Everything I know about making "wine", I learned from I Love Lucy. At least that's the way things may have been before studying more about the process in Scripture and tradition. We won't watch the video in class, but we will do a bit of the latter in order to understand better the culture and setting of some very important Biblical events and concepts. We begin: |

For moisturizing skin, and as a medicine - Isaiah 1:5f Read and discuss James 5:13-18, concerning elders. | Jesus is the great Physician! Mark 2:17; Luke 5:31 |
1 Kings 11:12; Psalm 92:10 Royal Anointings:
How is the word anointed being used in the religious world today? Define Messiah - the anointed one. To be the King of Israel, as well as to be a priest, a person had to be anointed with olive oil (1 Kings 19:15f; Psalm 89:20). Define Gethsemane - place of the olive press. | To get the full oil out of the olive it had to be crushed three times, correlating with the three times Jesus asks His disciples to wait with Him as He prays (Mark 14:34-42). Each time, He feels more of the weight of sin that He is going to carry to the cross. The third crushing is described in Luke 22:44, an image of oil pouring out of olives being crushed. Read Isaiah 53:5. Contrast with 2 Corinthians 4:7-12. |
Ultimately pressing and crushing the olives for oil produces light (Exodus 27:20, Mark 4:21). The higher quality oil produced less smoke. Jesus brings light to the world. Read John 8:12; 9:5; 11:9. He also calls us to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14; Philippians 2:14-16). | Foolish/Wise Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) Metaphorical Lamps:
