Art Appreciation
TravelRead Genesis 11:31. According to Bible Background by Glen L. Thompson: "In the time of Solomon, Israel controlled several ports on the Red Sea. Solomon used ships and sailors from in the Phoenician city of Tyre to carry on trade for him through these ports (1 Kings 10:11f). Israel had few ships and sailors of its own. Small fishing boats sailed on the Sea of Galilee, but in general, travel in Israel was mainly by land. "To travel quickly and easily over land, people need good roads. This principle was as true in Bible times as it is today. Already in ancient times, there were important roads and paths used by long distance travelers. These roads were not covered with concrete, blacktop, or even gravel. They were often full of holes and bumps. The best ones had simple bridges to help the traveler cross swamps, streams, and rivers during the rainy seasons. Some also had a series of wells and rest houses along the road to provide food and shelter for the travelers." | Use the map here and on your handout to track four major trade roads in Israel. Some important verses we will use are as follows: Exodus 13:17; Isaiah 9:1; Matthew 4:15 Genesis 14; Numbers 20:17; 21:22; 2 Kings 1:1; 8:20; 14:7-10, 25 |
