M4+H LE46UE:  Bolivar Contest Results

1/31/2016

After a beautiful day in Bolivar, Missouri, with 16 of the best-behaved students we have ever had, the awards have been distributed:
  • KAIN - seventh place ribbon, fourth grade Target Round.
  • LYDIA - ninth place ribbon, fourth grade Sprint Round.
  • DANIEL - seventh place ribbon, fourth grade Sprint Round.

This year, the requirements have changed, but as far as I can tell, after all the scores are tallied, the following are qualified to advance to the regional competition:
  • For fourth grade, DANIEL and LYDIA
  • For fifth grade, CARLOS

Again, our 16 student representatives made us very proud, and as cliché as it may sound, they are all winners in our book!  Mr. Culbertson and I look forward to spending more time with them all before the next contest in February.

Mathstakes:  Planet Fitness

Mathstakes - or Math Mistakes - are an attempt to encourage students to find and correct mistakes.  Most are introduced with a visual prompt, but there is no other word prompt outside of the visual.  In addressing the visual, learners must first find, or construct, what they believe the problem.  They must then figure out what was done in the visual to solve the given problem.  The problem and solution are always provided in the visual.

After this, learners are charged with the task of determining whether the solution is appropriate.  If so, they must defend it; if not, they must explain - or teach - a better process.

Use the worksheet (right)
to report your reasoning
for the picture provided:

  • Write the problem as you understand it.
  • What solution is given in the picture?
  • Decide whether the solution is (yes) or is not (no) appropriate.
  • In the box you chose, explain why you think it is correct or incorrect.  If "no", fix it.

Anti-Bullying, Globetrotter Style

"Handles" Franklin, bonafide Harlem Globetrotter, visited our school on Thursday to talk to our classes about reactions to bullying.  Along with the fun stuff, seen in the videos here, Handles gave students the ABCs of bullying:
Action
Bravery
Compassion
He also motivated us to keep working toward our dreams and to continue our education.

Electric Circuits:  DIY Filaments

Add a little nichrome wire, some clay to hold everything in position, and you've got a nice little filament, glowing with light and heat.  Don't touch it!

Electric Circuits:  Conductors and Insulators

These pictures are from a couple of different lessons. In the first two, we are attempting to light a standard light bulb using D-cell batteries.  Have you ever tried it?  We lined up a bunch of batteries and completed the circuit until we had enough electricity to light it (kind of).

The other pictures are from our lesson about conductors and insulators. Hoggatteers did great at predicting the results as they tested pencils, nails, golf tees, etc.  They recorded the results in a t-chart, and finally took a quiz on Socrative.

Soon, we will fashion our own filaments and attempt to make them light.

You have been charged
with rooting out a stowaway.

One of the four numbers below does not belong with the rest.
Your mission is to identify the intruder,
and defend your identification mathematically.

From a different point of view, might a different number be identified as the stowaway?

In an attempt to address the eight Math Practices in the graphic at left, I will expose the class to One Problem to Solve (OPTS), one of which is displayed below. Students will discover and create their own problems, while being guided by the teacher.

Picture

Watch this video, and describe the situation:
Write down the first mathematical question that comes to mind.

As a class, we will decide on a central question to work on.

Make three smart guesses to answer the central question:
a guess too low, a guess too high, and a guess in the middle.

Place your guesses on the number line.

WHILE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC...

Learn more about
hot dogs,
including Nathan's:

How Many Hot Dogs
Can You Eat in 10 Minutes?

Picture

What information is necessary in order to answer our central question?
Picture
Picture
What information is provided above?

What tools might you need to solve the problem?

What strategies might you use?

Solve to answer the central question.

Picture

How close was the actual solution to your estimate?

What would have helped you achieve a more accurate estimate?

Picture

Did you make any mistakes along the way?
Fix them.

How might you avoid such a mistake in the future?

Explain your work to someone else?  Did s/he do the work differently?
Can you explain the process using the other person's methods?

On Target

Students should appreciate the creativity that is involved in approaching Math from a different point of view.  With On Target, they will have the chance to create their expressions to result in a given number.

The target number will be provided and written in the "bull's eye". In the 25 other open sections of the target, the student will write equations.

For example, if the target number is 36, the student may write expressions like:
6 squared
3 x 12

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8
72/2

Electric Circuits:  Light Those Lights

1/22/2016

At long last, Hoggatteers have gotten their hands into the electric circuit materials.

This week, we discussed electricity in general - what we know about it, who "invented" it, how it works, what it does, etc. - and found that it is unexpectedly a broad topic.
We will attempt to answer some of the questions that linger in our minds about electricity in the coming days.

The first real challenge was to use a single D-cell battery, a light bulb, and one wire to figure out how to light a small light bulb.  In all, we discovered four ways to make this happen.

There is a legend that says that when Thomas Edison invented his light bulb, someone in the press asked him how he felt in failing to invent the thing on his first 999 attempts.  Edison remarked that he had not failed 999 times, but that he had discovered 999 ways to not make a light bulb.  I ask you, is that not the positive, persevering attitude we want our children to cultivate?  If a student gains that drive, there must be more to this simple science lesson than meets the eye.

On Tuesday, we presented An Evening with Science.  We had four stations for hands-on experiments for families, and we did a couple of larger demonstrations from the stage.

This was the latest of Cecil Floyd's family events, and we tried to make it special for all.

ClassDojo and Growth Mindset:  Perseverance

We use ClassDojo to track behaviors in our class.  The good folks at ClassDojo have produced a series of videos to promote Growth Mindset, the first of which will be released today.

While I could provide an explanation of Growth Mindset, the video (below) is about the simplest description of it out there.  We look forward to future videos in the series.

Teacher Collaboration

From time to time, I need to welcome people to our website.  Just as I am an eclectic teacher, The Hoggatteer Experience is more than a simple classroom website.  While, yes, I do report our classroom comings and goings here, offer announcements for families, and disseminate information about education, I also intend for this site to be useful for teachers who may be looking for ideas and tools to use in their classrooms.  Our site has many pages of material, but if you are my brother or sister in education, might I suggest that you hover over the Orientation button in the menu bar above, move your cursor down to Families, Teachers, and Alumni and over to select the Teacher Collaboration title.  On that page, you will find ideas galore. Certainly, there is something there for you.

Mathematical Practices

Here are some more derivations of the eight Mathematical Practices.  These, along with a toolbelt full of problem-solving strategies help students understand and implement their mathematical knowledge and abilities.  These are designed to challenge students, while at the same time providing them with guidance and structure within which they attack higher-order and multi-step problems.

The graphic at left is simply a list of the Practices as they are presented, while below are versions that should be easier for children to understand.
