Teacher File Cabinet

As often as I can, I attempt to be unique.  I like to think outside the box.
I like to create new and exciting ways to get my classes to wonder, explore, and discover.

I don't always come up with the ideas on my own, but I enjoy putting my own spin on the ideas I find from others.

Some of those ideas are presented here for educators to adapt to their own teacher personalities and educational needs.

I do not suggest that I have a monopoly on ideas or teaching methods;
please take the parts that work for you, and freely adapt the ones that don't.

Artifacts of Engagement

Put objects into your students' hands.  Organize a table to engage your students in three dimensions.  Create a situation in your classroom that encourages academic rigor, while at the same time introducing your students to profound topics.  Curate sets of items to increase focus on comprehension, curiosity, and creative thinking in any subject.

Open-Ended Math & Language

Encourage reluctant students to enter the lesson.  Hook them and engage them with open-ended conversations.  These ideas can be as structured as the teacher chooses.  The presenter uses curated graphics to start conversations that can become larger activities and projects in the math and language realms.  Once in the lesson, students voluntarily remain for the instruction.

The Author Speaks

D. Ed. Hoggatt is an inspirational presenter with more than 30 years of experience teaching elementary age students in public schools.  He holds degrees in public speaking and elementary education.  He has performed in community theater productions and is a former newspaper editor.  He currently enjoys preaching for the churches of Christ when called to do so.  In his book and history presentations, he covers each of the following three topics.  He may also tailor a presentation to meet your needs, or make a presentation about George Washington and Growth Mindset, similar to the workshop described above.

Writing

Mr. Hoggatt welcomes invitations to visit schools and other groups to share about the writing experience.  Mr. Hoggatt will help students understand the process of writing, from concept to completion, while emphasizing the joy that comes with each step.  He may also present information about self-publishing, all while sharing excerpts of his fiction and nonfiction writing.

Living History

Mr. Hoggatt describes his personal experiences during the 1995 terrorist bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.  This presentation is truthful, heartfelt, and encouraging, as this author discusses being in a nearby classroom when the blast occurred.  This is a student's rare opportunity to hear from someone who lived through this important historic event, as they learn the differences between being a victim and being a survivor.

Presentation Points
  • An Ordinary Day
  • A Nearby Explosion
  • The School's Reaction
  • Rescue and Recovery
  • The World Reacts
  • A Change of Heart
  • In Memorium
  • Questions and Answers

This presentation coincides with Hoggatt's original work, Crumbling Spirit.
Picture

Fury and Compassion

On May 22, 2011, Mr. Hoggatt watched and listened as an EF-5 tornado destroyed a large portion of Joplin, Missouri, along with the lives of two of his best friends.  His presentation brings them into the emotions of the situation and helps them realize that we can do more than read about such tragedies or watch them on the news.

Presentation Points
  • A Beautiful Day
  • Dark Rumbling
  • Inside the Funnel
  • Reaction
  • Reaching out
  • The Extra Step
  • Questions and Answers

This presentation coincides with Hoggatt's novel, Out of the Wind.
