When students entered the classroom on Tuesday, the stage was set with some special lighting and sound effects. A campfire flutters and audibly crackles in the center of the room, while the ceiling is illuminated with a chilling, blue glow, a cold, whistling wind blows through the place, a slight fog fills the air, and students wonder what is in store for them.

| | This wasn't the first experiential writing opportunity students have encountered in the first three weeks of school. In fact, they were encouraged to write about the archaeological dig they experienced on the first day of school. They also wrote following an investigation into police evidence during the second week. This teacher offers experiences to inspire students to write, giving them ideas that they are eager to get onto paper, instead of constantly beating students over the head with textbook prompts. Judging by their reactions, fourth graders appreciate having the experience in history or science to write about. |
