What they didn't know was they were being set up for a writing assignment as as introduction to the history lesson about the Starving Time in Jamestown.
| This wasn't the first experiential writing opportunity students have encountered in the first three weeks of school. In fact, they were encouraged to write about the archaeological dig they experienced on the first day of school. They also wrote following an investigation into police evidence during the second week. This teacher offers experiences to inspire students to write, giving them ideas that they are eager to get onto paper, instead of constantly beating students over the head with textbook prompts. Judging by their reactions, fourth graders appreciate having the experience in history or science to write about. |
