It may be that we have a lack of respect for inspiration of Scripture. Of course, we read in 2 Timothy 3:16f that “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
Then we study in 2 Pet. 1:19–21, “So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”
Perhaps, if I’m being honest without myself, I will realize that I don’t study the Old Testament because studying is too hard. I don’t know how to study. Or I’m just not motivated. Much in the same way some people aren’t motivated to get out of bed on Sunday morning, even more are unlikely to study their Bible, let alone their Old Testament, outside of a Bible class or assembly time.
How do we prove New Testament Scripture? One way is through a study of the prophecies deftly outlined in the Old Testament. Plus, it may be embarrassing to get to Heaven & have Moses ask, “How did you like my book?” Howard G. Hendricks spoke of 3 attitudes to Bible study:
- Castor oil stage – study Bible b/c we know it’s good for us, but it isn’t enjoyable
- Cereal stage – when Bible study is dry/uninteresting, but we know it’s nourishing
- Peaches & cream stage – we are really feasting on Word of God
Bible teaches we can’t be disciples of Christ if we don’t have regular intake of Word of God. When you know Word of God well, you’re going to know will of God.
John 8:31f: So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
We read 2 Tim. 3:16f, now let’s back up to verse 14: “You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
We must not shy away from it because it is elementary; we must study it because it is fundamental. We must not avoid it because it is difficult; we will study it because it is unique and provable.
