The scenic drive from Rutland, Vermont, last month, crossed the New York border, and soon I found myself in the town of Whitehall. After crossing the Champlain Canal, and following an Amish buggy for a few feet, I pulled into a little lot alongside it to snap a couple of pictures of the bridge and the lock. Also, along the way was a sign commemorating Robert Rogers. Rogers, a British operative, is said to have inspired the ranger program makes up some of today's special forces.
