Music Appreciation:  Hakuna Matata

Students are often called upon to read "chorally".
That is, they read together simultaneously

as a group.

Repeating this practice assists young readers with reading fluency - the speed, accuracy, and inflection of  oral reading.

Why not, since it's called "choral" reading anyway, actually read the chorus of a song?

Reading to the Wall

I love this sound.  Twenty-five students.  All reading orally.  Books of their choice.  Simultaneously.  The room is abuzz with fluency practice.

We did this for 15 minutes on Wednesday, followed by 15 minutes of protected silent reading, during which students were encouraged to continue reading or reread the same books.  I also love this sound!

Watch the short videos below to see both steps to this "activity".

Principal Reflections

4/13/2016

Once again, it seems time to reflect upon all the principals I have worked for through my 26 years in the teaching profession:

  1. Robert Higgins:  This was the first man to hire me as a teacher.  Mr. Higgins was akin to Morgan Freeman's portrayal of a high school principal in Lean on Me.  In my interview, he (Higgins, not Freeman) asked me what kind of car I drove.  Since I owned a Ford, he hired me, since "they" tended to steal Chrysler products from the playground/parking lot.
  2. Robert Shelton:  This was the man who taught me what a lesson really is.  He quickly determined that I was unprepared for my classroom, but with quick coaching, he also figured out I was easily trainable.  Shelton is the reason I often ask my class to respond in unison rather than call on an individual (both overtly and covertly).  I also started thinking about high-order questioning under his tutelage.
  3. Gary Blevins:  Blevins is the man who gave me responsibility and authority.  I was his lead teacher, in charge of the building any time he was out.  He confided many things to me and spoke to me as an equal and a friend. Under Blevins, I made schoolwide decisions concerning parents, students, and other teachers.
  4. John Williams:  Williams was the principal who hired me at Cecil Floyd.  He told me, one time, that if he were to ever return to the classroom, he would choose to be a teacher like me.  He was also the first principal to write a suggestion for improvement on my evaluation.
  5. Dr. Price:  Price was our principal for about a week before being asked to leave (Don't ask.).  He wrote nice notes to me about my hallway bulletin board.  While many were afraid of Price, he never had a negative word to say to me - at least not to my face.
  6. Janice Southwick:  Southwick was the first female principal for whom I ever worked.  She was experienced as a leader and commanded respect among parents.
  7. Steve Jones:  Jones taught me what it was like to slow down and to be calm.  Nothing seemed to rattle him in his potentially stressful role as a leader.  I have had a hand in teaching a couple of his grandsons, as well.  We still see Jones, from time to time, as a substitute in our classrooms at Cecil Floyd.
  8. Evan Mense:  A couple of years before Mense came to Cecil Floyd as our principal, he served as our assistant principal.  In between, he was the principal at Kelsey Norman.  Mense enjoyed having a good time.  He was somewhat driven by data.
  9. Doug Adams:  Mr. Adams returned to the role of principal after his retirement from one of our other elementary schools.  Mr. Adams brought some degree of moral clarity to our staff and served to "right the ship" of our building following some rough seas.
  10. Elaina Edman:  Replacing Mense was Edman, promoted from assistant principal after being an art teacher for several years.  Edman was energetic and her mind seemed to be constantly in high gear.  She still works in our district as a teacher of gifted students.
Picture
Chris Bozarth
11.  Gayle Hennessey:  As our current principal, Hennessey is looking forward to
her upcoming retirement.  She gave me the gift of empowerment before that
was a buzz word.  In the few years Hennessey has been with us, she has
helped our school to unify and has encouraged me to become a leader once
      again.
12.  Chris Bozarth:  Bozarth will arrive in our school for the 2016/7 school year.
He has experience as a high school and middle school principal.  He works
with a degree in Health and Physical Education.  Bozarth is a strong,
churchgoing family man and is said to be "servant-minded".  We predict that
he will be a shepherd - not a wrangler - for the Cecil Floyd staff.

There you have them:  12 principals in 26 years - and that doesn't count the numerous assistant principals and summer school principals.

We're Going Spelunking

4/12/2016

Fourth graders are taking an excursion to Bluff Dwellers Cavern, this Friday, April 15, to do some spelunking.  After our studies of caves and geology at the beginning of the year, we may as well visit the real thing. Admission to the cave is $3.50 for each student.  Please don't wait until Friday to pay; send the fee to school now so I can ensure all students are going.
There are some important things to consider when preparing for this trip:
1.  Wear old shoes that can get wet or slightly muddy.
2.  Dress for the weather, however a light jacket is all that is necessary for inside the cave (60 degrees).
3.  Please send a sack lunch (All leftovers and containers will be thrown away.).
4.  Students may bring cameras, but remember the cave is dark.
5.  Students may bring electronic games and music players (muted or with headphones) for the bus ride.  These will
     be left on the bus.

Read the sentence below.  Do you see any problems?

the principal encourages us to do
our best good work @ all times.

Do not rewrite the sentence.  In fact, don't even fix the sentence.  Instead, on your paper, tell the writer how to correct three things.

In an attempt to address the eight Math Practices in the graphic at left, I will expose the class to One Problem to Solve (OPTS), one of which is displayed below. Students will discover and create their own problems, while being guided by the teacher.

Watch this video and describe the situation:
Write down the first mathematical question that comes to mind.

As a class, we will decide on a central question to work on.

Make three smart guesses to answer the central question:
a guess too low, a guess too high, and a guess in the middle.

Place your guesses on the number line.

WHILE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC

Visual Poetry

4/9/2016

After reading Love that Dog, by Sharon Creech.  This is a spectacular book, written in verse from a young boy's point of view.  The reader is forced to infer the other part of the "conversation", where the boy's teacher reads poetry for the class to react to.

In one of the poems, the boy has just been exposed to a visual poem where the poet has made the shape of an apple with words.  The boy's reaction is a visual poem of his own, in honor of his yellow dog.  In our own reactions, students created their own visual poems.

New Principal Presented

Since Principal Hennessey's retirement begins when this school year is completed, a search was made for the best replacement for her position.  Once the interview process was finished, that replacement was selected, and we were presented with the new principal on Tuesday.

Upon the school board's acceptance, we will begin hearing the name of Chris Bozarth echoing through the halls of Cecil Floyd next year. Mr. Bozarth is a 1998 graduate of Welch (Oklahoma) High School, a 2002 graduate of Northeastern Oklahoma State University (with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education), and a 2012 graduation of Southwestern Oklahoma State University (with a Master's in Educational Administration).  He has worked in Jay (Oklahoma) Public Schools as a teacher and administrator in elementary, middle school, and high school.

Mr. Bozarth's wife, Katie and their two sons will make a terrific addition to the Cecil Floyd family. Though we have not met Mr. Bozarth yet, we are told he is a humble man, and we look forward to working with him in the coming years.

We Went to College

I can't report that our trip to Missouri State University was a complete success.  After a late start and a directional error, we finally arrived at the campus in time for a quick tour and lunch, before reloading the bus for school.  Our hope is to encourage our fourth graders to start considering colleges earlier rather than later.

Strings Concert

Our strings students graced the school with a demonstration of this year's growth.  As beginning students of the violin, viola, and cello, they are not as advanced, collectively, as their fifth grade and middle school counterparts, but it is nice to see how they improve through the years.

These pictures only show two of the Hoggatteers before the concert began, on Monday.  These two were on the front row, so it was easier to photograph them.  Ain't they sweet!

Book:  Pennyroyal Academy

4/4/2016

Here's the first 2016/7 Mark Twain Award nominee I've read - Pennyroyal Academy.  Despite it breaking a couple of my rules for personal book selection (It's from my least favorite genre, fantasy, and it already has sequels.  Not only that, but it unoriginally takes characters from other sources.), I actually enjoyed reading it.  Author M. A. Larson put together some great word descriptions and didn't hold back on some difficult, or at least regional, vocabulary.  Larson definitely has a handle on the craft and the art of writing.

From the book's website:
A girl from the forest arrives in a bustling kingdom with no name and no idea why she is there, only to find herself at the center of a world at war. She enlists at Pennyroyal Academy, where princesses and knights are trained to battle the two great menaces of the day: witches and dragons. There, given the name “Evie,” she must endure a harsh training regimen under the steel glare of her Fairy Drillsergeant, while also navigating an entirely new world of friends and enemies. As Evie learns what it truly means to be a princess, she realizes surprising things about herself and her family, about human compassion and inhuman cruelty. And with the witch forces moving nearer, she discovers that the war between princesses and witches is much more personal than she could ever have imagined.

Bus Driver Appreciation

4/1/2016

Picture
We made cards.
We signed a banner.
We had an assembly.
We shook hands.

All to show our bus drivers and bus aides we appreciate them.  Afterwards, the drivers were all whisked away for a special breakfast down the hall.

It's hard to tell if they felt as important as they should feel, but we're glad we made the effort.  Too often do we neglect certain aspects of our school community.  It takes many people to keep this ship afloat, and when we all do well, it benefits our students.

Driving a bus cannot be an easy thing to do.
