| You should see some of the completed products of our recent jaunt into the sketching world. The original images were provided by some old materials that I brought with me from Oklahoma 27 years ago. The materials are even older than that, but they are still perfectly suited for our consideration of Native American tribes in this country, and especially those that were relocated to Oklahoma reservations. As we have looked at the plight of the Indians before and during the French and Indian War, we easily see, using map evidence, that these people were squeezed between French conquests in the current nation of Canada and the British colonies on the East Coast of the current nation of the United States. |
I wanted my students to bond with some of these people - to see just how worn out they were, yet how resilient they had to become. Things in the 18th century weren't easy for any of the folks living in the New Land, but for the native peoples, things could get especially brutal. You can't always see those things in a photograph, but for many of the sketches my students created, the hardships and mistreatment can be read - in the wrinkles and determined expressions they display.
