In the last week of school, our class studied the names of the 44 United States presidents. More than memorizing the presidents, I wanted students to learn how to use a mnemonic device to remember a list of items in order. For the presidents, with a little work, a silly story was created, relying heavily on imagery and wordplay. Students, with a little effort, perhaps you can still remember the list. Try it!

I'm a big fan of the poetry on your website. I like the idea of teaching the kids how to use a mnemonic device to remember the names of the presidents. Can you share the silly story that you created?

Hi there, Lisa! Thanks for looking things over. I didn't come up with the ridiculous mnemonic for the presidents; I just modified it from a YouTube video that I found. It was a great way to spend some of that time at the end of the year. The actual video raises some questions at the end (when it gets to Bill Clinton), so I did not use it as shown. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sgD50RuIVE . Enjoy, and happy summer!
