The first building I walked into at Mount Vernon - long before laying eyes on George Washington's mansion - was the Ford Orientation Center. Inside, one is faced with statuary portraying George and Martha, along with Martha's two sons from a previous marriage (Martha was widowed twice.). Stained glass windows color one wall with important scenes from George's experiences, and including one incident that has long since been debunked as not being true. The orientation film in the theater here is called Washington's War and is an excellent portrayal of Washington's rise in the ranks and some of the mistakes and heroic feats he made. | |
In this lobby there is also a very detailed "dollhouse" that shows every room in the mansion. In some of the pictures below, if you didn't know better, you would think that this was the actual house and furnishings.
