| Up and at 'em! When one stays on the property at George Washington's Mount Vernon, one tends to wake up early and stay up late. In fact, one yearns to spend every waking minute exploring and appreciating the estate. As our facilitator, Jason Anderson, is fond of saying, "You can sleep when you get home." Jason is the reason for so many early mornings. His offer to take us to the piazza and appreciate the sunrise at 5:30 in the morning was a real offer. Even a guy like me (who is decidedly not a morning person) had no trouble getting up at that terrible hour. | |
Interestingly, on the three mornings we trekked to President Washington's back porch, we saw three distinctly different rises of the sun. The first (below left) was a drizzly beginning to the day, and the tint of the sky bathed everything in blue. The second day (right) was the more traditional and idealized sunrise, complete with vibrant oranges and yellows, illuminating the clouds with enchanting tints. On the third day, all of the previous colors presented themselves.

It's easy to see why George and Martha enjoyed the beauty of the Potomac so much. We are truly fortunate to live in this amazing world.
