One of the methods for the spies in George Washington's network was to use a mask - not to wear a mask to cover the identity of a spy, but a mask to cover the unnecessary words in a secret message. I wanted to find a memorable way for students to connect with the concept, so we brought blackout poetry in for part of the afternoon. It's not exactly the same, but students really bought into the activity. Students took pages from an old book, chose various words to form thoughts or sentences that made sense. |
