Book Review: Wonder

According to the publisher:

August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances?

This book was given to me by a friend, so it was the first on the 2014/5 Mark Twain Award list that I read.  We never get a picture of Auggie's facial deformity, though students who have seen the cover often think the kid has only one eye.  That's unfortunate because it gives them the wrong idea from the beginning.

I found Auggie to be a little annoying as a main character - not as endearing or likable as I would like.  In fact, he's kind of a pain in the neck, and I wasn't totally on his side.  Read it for yourself, and let me know what you think.
