I've learned that good preparation is much more about "lesson anticipation" than "lesson planning." The substantial difference between "lesson planning" and "lesson anticipation" is that planning focuses on what I plan to happen. Lesson anticipation focuses on the unexpected and opens the door to new learning possibilities - for my students and for me. This thought from Steve Wyborney touches my own beliefs about lesson planning. For years, I have been of the opinion that lesson planning is more of a trouble-shooting measure than a strategy for managing a class. |
There is more value in planning units and constructing timelines for our instruction than in submitting ourselves to the menial task of intricately planning lessons for each of our courses. It might be the opposite for certain other teachers, but not for many of us. As educators, we must also be ready to take our classes in different directions as our students reveal to us their needs and interests.

It's funny how much your class changes in the years, and also funny to see how much it hasn't.
