As we have recently experienced another period of isolation in our own houses now, let us be thankful that our lives and our communities have not reached a point in which our only choice is to cannibalize or starve.
In this short explanation from Jamestown (the first American settlement), we learn about a period known as The Starving Time. As you might infer, this was not a bright point in our history. The native people in the area surrounding the Jamestown colony made it very difficult for the settlers to hunt outside of the stockade, and women had been removed from the area, making it a time of great isolation. The effect was a great and horrible starving that killed many and even resulted in cannibalism among the people. As we have recently experienced another period of isolation in our own houses now, let us be thankful that our lives and our communities have not reached a point in which our only choice is to cannibalize or starve.
