One of the first prominent galleries, at the Fred Jones Museum of Art on the Oklahoma University campus in Norman, contains the Weitzenhoffer Collection. This (and in the smaller galleries surrounding it) is where one will find the masters. In one afternoon, I enjoyed casting my eyes upon works by Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and other painters with names like Ninja Turtles. Most of these were donated a couple of decades ago by a family that lived nearby. This gallery is unmissable as it is set up to look like the Weitzenhoffers' actual house, complete with furniture, family portraits, and collections of fine dishware and even a few Dalmatian effigies. | |
Even with the area being right at the entrance, I saved it for last. The dark-wood setting and the cool museum offered a relaxing location for a quiet ending to the visit. Rest assured, however, some of the most interesting displays lay just ahead, and I'll report about them soon.
