Signal FlagsJohn Paul Jones deceived the enemies by raising their own flag. Upon approaching closer, Jones could easily strike the opposing vessel with enough force to win the battle - after announcing to anyone who was paying attention that he was, indeed, American. All of this communication could be done at a distance through the use of flags. Today, ships and boats utilize an international code and signal others by displaying a series of flags (right). And today's project is to make some of these flags to display around the room. What kind of a message do we need to send? You'll notice that the chart here shows Morse Code, another method of communicating from ship to ship. If you have some extra time, try your hand at using Morse to send the same message. |  |
