On our first full day in Gatlinburg, I was impressed with how quickly we could drive out of the tourist trap main road and find ourselves inside a pristine National Park. This scenic drive was simply beautiful, accentuated by opening the sun roof on the car and looking up at the canopy and the rock walls with trees towering above us as we coasted through. We made stops along the way to enjoy the scenery, but our first real stop was to hike a peaceful waterfall. I climbed as far as I could, but I didn't dare go further for fear of having trouble getting back down with my back in the shape it was on that day. | |

| There was but a single location that the traffic became a jam. For a short time, we were stuck on this curve (last picture on the left). Many were getting out of their cars and off of their cycles to walk ahead to see the problem. Sadly, we were being detained so the life flight helicopter could get a clear take off from the parking area ahead. A motorcyclist had been injured in an accident with a jeep. |
