Setting the Mood for Writing

As we begin the year, we are, once again, building writing and reading stamina.  One way we can motivate students to write more and include graphic details is to give them something about which to write.  When students entered the room, last Thursday, they were faced with a cold scene.  Blue light bathed the classroom, while a working campfire, complete with flames and smoke (special effects - don't worry) crackled in the center.  Sound effects included wind and fire, mixed with a bit of rainfall and accompanied by an eerie bit of music to push the scene along.  Students drew illustrations to get themselves started and then described their scene using written words.
