Long division can be a brutal thing to learn. We've been trying to conquer this division algorithm for a while, now, but to no avail. I have presented this is a few different ways and used a number of shortcuts or tricks, but a significant population of our class was still having difficulty.
So, I brought in our student teacher, Miss Fitzgerald, to present her own version of the lesson. Students reacted positively to her presentation. One approached me at the end of the lesson, and told me, "Mr. Hoggatt, you know when Miss Fitzgerald taught that lesson and we did those activities? I think something finally stuck." Sometimes it just takes hearing things from a different voice to get a concept through. We are both hoping more students will succeed. | |
